Or how do we stress it: We have anything but mountains. The two worlds is the hilly East with it's lakes and forests on the one side and the seacoast with it's beaches on the other side. Therefore most of the interesting nature regions you find in the East, North and South of the Capital Vilnius:

One route - along the Nieman river - connects of Lithuania East with the West (the coast) [LT2] The rest of the country is of minor interest (I shouldn't say so, but many parts are quite flat, agricultural and lack sights and tourist infrastructure). So for BaltiCCycle routes, the country was divided the two regions in the East - North of Vilnius (LT3) and South of Vilnius (LT1), the West of Lithuania (LT5) and the connection route (LT2). One project on cycle route development took as well place in the South West [LT4], but for international tourism this region is still of less interest. |

First - leave Vilnius to the Famous water castle of Trakai. Then, turn South. You will cross the hilly land of the Regional park Auštadvaris (and you will see, why they sometimes name it "Switzerland"), then enter the deep forest of the Dzukija, cut by big and small rivers. The wooden villages in the forests have often so few land, that sometimes it is even difficult to find a cow. It's said that the people live from mushrooms and berries - and that they love to sind... |

In the East - close to the border to Belarus - you find nature: Forests and rivers, and therefor also some National parks (Wigry in Poland, Dzukija in Lithuania. Still, this region is much less tourist than others (Mazuria in Poland or the Lithuanian coast). And the infrastructure is less developed and more like an adventure |
Der Osten an der Grenze zu Weißrussland ist schon von reiner Natur geprägt: Wälder und Flüsse. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass hier einige Nationalparks liegen (Wigry und in Polen, Dzukija in Litauen. Diese Gegend ist sicherlich weniger touristisch als andere (etwa die litauische Küste oder Masuren in Polen) und folglich etwas für Freunde der reinen Natur. |

We did it in 2003: 159 cyclist "tried" this route between the two capitals of Poland and Lithuania. This route in future shall become part of the EuroVelo network as No. 10 Northcape-Athens. Result of the bicycle tour is booklet, which puts together basic information and is available for 3€ only in the shop |
Wir haben diese Route auf einer Tour 2003 "ausprobiert": Mit 159 Radfahrern verbanden wir die Hauptstädte Litauens und Polens. Dabei vermieden wir die viel befahrenen Hauptstraßen.
Ein Ergebnis der Tour ist ein kleines Büchlein, dass die Basisinformationen bündelt und für nur 3€ im Internetladen erhältlich ist |

First of all I have to say, that this route is one of my favourites. Why? Because it connects the "Eastern Culture", the Lithuanian Capital, which is close to the border to Belarus with the Baltic Sea coast. Therefor it offers you to see the two different sides of Baltic states. |
Für mich eine der empfehlenswertesten Routen, weil sie den "Osten", der schon nah am Russischen Kulturkreis liegt mit dem "Westen", der ehemals deutschen Küste verbindet, also die deutlichen Unterschiede in Kultur, Natur und Architektur zeigt. |

a) the "Nieman cycle trail" from Kaunas to Šilute (Heydekrug in German).Within a project in 2004 the communities along the river made the plan for the construction of a bicycle path/route, so it starts to exist bit-by-bit. As well there is a description of the route available in Germanand Lithuanian language. Sorry, no English! |
a) den "Memelradweg" von Kaunas (Kowno) nach Šilute (oder Heydekrug auf Deutsch). Im Rahmen eines Projektes saßen 2004 die Landkreise am Fluss zusammen und erstellten den Plan für den schrittweisen Bau dieser Radroute. Also obwohl es noch keinen durchgehenden Radweh gibt, gibt's doch jedes Jahr mehr davon. Es gibt eine Routenbeschreibung auf Deutsch und Litauisch. |

b) The route(s) between Vilnius and Kaunas, the capital and the second largest city of Lithuania. Despite of some parts between Vilnius and Trakai there is no special cycling infrastructure, but paved country side roads crossing small villages and towns which still reminds their past as jewish Shtetel before the war. There are two main versions for cycling due to the fact that you somewhere have to cross the river Nieman: the Northern route takes at least two days and is more flat, but has one main advantage: You might visit the Lithuanian ethnograpic museum at Rumšik?s. The Southern route is provided with more hilly nature but takes at least one day more.

b) Die Routen zwischen Vilnius und Kaunas, der Hauptstadt und dier zweitgrößten Stadt in Litauen. Mit ganz minimalen Ausnahmen, gibt es keine Fahrradinfrastruktur. Was wir jedoch anbieten können, sind asphaltierte, verkehrsarme Nebenstraßen und kleine Orte, die vieles von ihrem Vorkriegs-Charme als jüdisches Städtchen bewahrt haben. Es gibt zwei Varianten zum Radfahren - was im Wesentlich daran liegt, dass man irgendwo über den Fluss Memel muss: Die Nordvariante dauert mindestens zwei Tage, sie ist flacher und hat den Vorteil, dass man das litauische ethnographische Freilichtmuseum in Rumšišk?s besuchen kann. Die Südvariante hingegen in Natur reicher, hügeliger - und dauert mindestens einen Tag länger. Für die möglichen Routen gibt es ein kleines Büchlein, dass für nur 3€ im Internetladen erhältlich ist. |

Very well in the reach from the capital Vilnius are the rich nature areas of the Aukštaitija - literally "highlands" - in Lithuania, with the oldest national park of Lithuania

nördlich von Vilnius liegen Wälder und Seen, und der älteste Nationalparks Litauens. Wer sich ein bisschen einliest wird auch finden, dass daneben das Atomkraftwerk Ignalina steht, das von der gleichen Bauweise wie der Reaktor in Tschernobyl ist. Nun wurde das AKW 2010 vom Netz genommen und muss uns nicht beunruhigen. Wir können und ungestört der Landschaft widmen. Hügelige, nicht asphaltierte Nebenstraßen machen die Gegend zu einem beliebten Ziel für Mountainbiker, hier liegt das litauische nationale Wintersportzentrum (zwar ist Litauen keine so große Wintersportnation wie Estland oder Lettland, aber hier kann man gut Skilanglauf betreiben.) |

Well, I know, the most cyclists try the direct connection from Vilnius to Riga. But that's a route we do not recommend: it is quite boring, flat, "nothing special" leading you through industrial and agricultural areas. So, what we recommend is to turn a bit more to the East and visit the reach nature areas of the Aukštaitija - literally "highlands" - in Lithuania, with the oldest national park of Lithuania and the East of Latvia called "Latgale". Together they build what is called "The Baltic Lakeland"

Ja, die meisten schauen wohl auf die direkte Verbindung von Vilnius nach Riga. Aber Zentral-Litauen und -Lettand ist eher flach, industriell und landwirtschaftlich geprägt und somit nicht besonders anziehend (eben eher für die Durchfahrt geeignet). Deswegen empfehlen wir einen Schlenker nach Osten: Durch das "Baltische Seenland" der Aukštaitija in Litauen und Latgale in Lettland. Hier befinden sich in einer leicht hügeligen Seenlandschaft z.B. der älteste litauische Nationalpark |

LT4 Grenzland Suwalkija (Danzig-Kurische Nehrung) In der Sowjetzeit geschlossene Zone liegt dieser weiße Fleck auf der Landkarte im Dreieckland zwischen Litauen, der russischen Region Kaliningrad und Polen. Früher Außengrenze der glorreichen Sowjetunion besticht es heute durch die wilde Natur an der Außengrenze von NATO und Europäischer Union. Und wer um's Kaliningrader Gebiet von Danzig/Gdansk zur Kurischen Nehrung fahren will, der ist hier genau richtig. |
