First of all I have to say, that this route is one of my favourites. Why? Because it connects the "Eastern Culture", the Lithuanian Capital, which is close to the border to Belarus with the Baltic Sea coast. Therefor it offers you to see the two different sides of Baltic states.

Für mich eine der empfehlenswertesten Routen, weil sie den "Osten", der schon nah am Russischen Kulturkreis liegt mit dem "Westen", der ehemals deutschen Küste verbindet, also die deutlichen Unterschiede in Kultur, Natur und Architektur zeigt. 

 The Route from the Lithuanian Capital to the Sea coast consists of three parts:

 Die Route von der Litauischen Hauptstadt zur Ostsee besteht aus drei Teilen:

a) the "Nieman cycle trail"

from Kaunas to Šilut? (Heydekrug in German).Within a project in 2004 the communities along the river made the plan for the construction of a bicycle path/route, so it starts to exist bit-by-bit.

As well there is a description of the route available in German and Lithuanian language. Sorry, no English!

a) den "Memelradweg"

von Kaunas (Kowno) nach Šilut? (oder Heydekrug auf Deutsch). Im Rahmen eines Projektes saßen 2004 die Landkreise am Fluss zusammen und erstellten den Plan für den schrittweisen Bau dieser Radroute. Also obwohl es noch keinen durchgehenden Radweh gibt, gibt's doch jedes Jahr mehr davon.

b) The route(s) between Vilnius and Kaunas,

the capital and the second largest city of Lithuania. Despite of some parts between Vilnius and Trakai there is no special cycling infrastructure, but paved country side roads crossing small villages and towns which still reminds their past as jewish Shtetel before the war.

 There are two main versions for cycling due to the fact that you somewhere have to cross the river Nieman:

the Northern route takes at least two days and is more flat, but has one main advantage: You might visit the Lithuanian ethnograpic museum at Rumšik?s.

The Southern route is provided with more hilly nature but takes at least one day more. 

There is a small booklet on the possible routes available in the shop for only 3€.

b) Die Routen zwischen Vilnius und Kaunas,

der Hauptstadt und dier zweitgrößten Stadt in Litauen. Mit ganz minimalen Ausnahmen, gibt es keine Fahrradinfrastruktur. Was wir jedoch anbieten können, sind asphaltierte, verkehrsarme Nebenstraßen und kleine Orte, die vieles von ihrem Vorkriegs-Charme als jüdisches Städtchen bewahrt haben.

 Es gibt zwei Varianten zum Radfahren - was im Wesentlich daran liegt, dass man irgendwo über den Fluss Memel muss:

Die Nordvariante dauert mindestens zwei Tage, sie ist flacher und hat den Vorteil, dass man das litauische ethnographische Freilichtmuseum in Rumšišk?s besuchen kann.  

Die Südvariante hingegen in Natur reicher, hügeliger - und dauert mindestens einen Tag länger.

Für die möglichen Routen gibt es ein kleines Büchlein, dass für nur 3€ im Internetladen erhältlich ist.

 c) The Sea Side Cycle Route Lithuania of which one part is the connection between the Nieman delta and the city of Klaipeda.
